1600m Relay Team Advances to Regional Championships
In the final race of the evening, the team of Parker Powell, Francisco Llauger, Avery Williams and Peyton Powell gave the Tompkins faithful some last second fireworks. Earlier in the day freshman Kati Shaposhnikov qualified for the regional meet in the girls' high jump by placing 3rd with a jump of 5 feet 2 inches. So then it was time to wait for the final event. Parker Powell started on the outside in lane 7 and quickly made up the stagger on lane 8 but Strake Jesuit's Christian McStravick pulled ahead quickly in lane 4. Parker handed the stick off to Llauger with a respectable 51.2 split. Llauger then raced to the break line and tried to keep us in position to qualify. With a very close hand off between 2nd through 7th place, we were in a big crowd and came off the first turn in 7th place. Avery Williams used the next 200 meters to move Tompkins to 3rd place overall. Peyton Powell got the stick on the anchor leg and had to fight off Katy ISD rivals Morton Ranch and Mayde Creek. Westside and Lamar were a few steps ahead of Peyton as they approached the finish line with Morton Ranch mounting a big charge. Unfortunately for Morton Ranch, their runner thought the finish line was at the front of the exchange zone and leaned too early. Peyton held him off by running all the way through the line. The boys broke their own school record by .06 of a second (3:24.04) and advanced to the Region 3-6A Championships at Crump Stadium next Friday and Saturday.

Hoka One One Postal Nationals this Saturday
Traditionally the "Postal Nationals" was a time trial held either the week before district and/or the week after state. Teams would run a 2 mile time trial and use "snail mail" to send in the results and be ranked against other teams in the nation. Now that we have the internet we just post our results on line and see where we stack up.
This Saturday we have invited the Seven Lakes boys team to Tompkins to compete in our Postal Nationals competition. We will begin warm ups at 6:30am and we will start running heats of the 2 mile when the guys are ready. We should start the time trials close to 7am. The boys are running really well right now heading into Nike South and we should see some really fast times with the Seven Lakes kids there as well.
Here is a link to the current Postal Nationals rankings. http://www.hokaoneonepostalnationals.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=46034&do=title&title_id=840&p=B00FR

Varsity 7th at Bellaire
Photos by Renee D'Rovencourt
With the entire team setting new personal records Saturday, our team 5k record was broken by almost a full minute. We averaged 17:33 as a team just one second off of district rival Mayde Creek's average and finished only 9 points behind them.
Francisco Llauger and Nicolay Hoven paced the team with times of 17:14 and 17:15 respectively. Kyle Petryszak was right on their heels with a 17:25. Daniel Lerma, Ryan Al-Tayar, Pablo Rodriguez and Benjie Lacey rounded out the top 7 with 17:48, 18:05, 18:05 and 18:23 respectively. It was great weather and a fast course with some mud and quite a few turns.
The JV squad had a pretty good run as well. Saurabh Dhole set a personal best for 5k with 19:06 to lead the team. Braden Woodworth also broke 20 minutes for the first time this season with a 19:27.
Four freshmen ran varsity this week and we were still able to finish 4th in the freshmen division. Ramsay Shi led the team with a 2.1 mile time of 13:07 and a 13th place finish. Dan D'Rovencoutry also finished in the top 20 at 19th with a personal best of 13:40.

Changes to the Bellaire Schedule
The meet directors made some changes to the meet schedule last night. The times are approximate because they are using a “rolling schedule” meaning they will start the race when everyone is ready to start not specifically at those times. Which means that if the meet is running smoothly we will race earlier than expected and if it is not running smoothly we will race later than expected. We will run a freshmen team since there is now a freshmen race around 9:30. Here is the updated schedule:

Big Meet Performances
Even though the varsity's team place in the elite division was near the bottom we ran our fastest team time ever at Tompkins. Last year at district we averaged 18:31.26 for 5k with a total team time (combined time of top 5 runners) of 1:32:36 and our 1-5 split was 91 seconds. On Saturday we bested that by 6 seconds on a much tougher course. At UTSA the team average was 18:30 and the team total was 1:32:30 with a 1-5 split of only 63 seconds. We aren't where we want to be yet but we are improving and we are running faster now than we did at the end last year.
Francisco Llauger continued to lead the team with a PR of 18:04 (2nd all-time), Nicolay Hoven was #2 this week in 18:24 (7th all-time) and Kyle Petryszak also PRed with an 18:27 (8th all-time).
The freshmen continued to show how much talent they have with a 3rd place performance (out of 29 teams) on JV and three freshmen in the top 11. Ryan Al-Tayar got in the front early and stayed there finishing 5th overall in a 2 mile PR of 11:31 (4th on the all-time list). Pablo Rodriguez was right behind him with an 8th place finish in 11:39 (6th on the all-time list) and David Hand was edged out by a junior for 10th finishing in 11:43 (9th all-time).
This Saturday morning at 6:30am we will have one of the most important runs of the year! Next week we run close to home at Bear Creek Park and the Bellaire Invitational. This will be a 3 mile race for everyone and the only 3 mile race of the year (not the full 5k). This will be a great opportunity to get on the record board on a very fast course.

Falcons earn their first varsity win at Brazos
Junior Francisco Llauger continues to lead the team with a 3rd place finish and a 5k PR of 18:09, also the 2nd fastest cross country 5k run at Tompkins. Llauger had 2nd place wrapped up when an unaware fan jumped out in front of him less than 100 meters from the finish line which caused him to lose his momentum and get caught at the tape.
Varsity Results
Freshman Daniel Lerma also finished in the top 10, taking 9th with an 18:19 and junior Kyle Petryszak finished 10th with an 18:30.
The junior varsity boys also won their division led by freshman Ryan Al-Tayar. Al-Tayar took it to the wire and just missed out on the individual win finishing 2nd overall. Sophomore Saurabh Dhole and freshmen Pablo Rodriguez and David Hand also finished in the top 10 in 5th, 7th and 8th respectively.

Llauger finishes top 10 again! Freshmen win Brazoswood
Junior Francisco Llauger led the four varsity guys running Saturday with a tenth place finish and junior Kyle Petryszak finshed14th overall. The group did not score as a team because we only ran 4 guys and you need 5 to score.
Freshman Daniel Lerma requested to run with his freshmen brothers this week and led them to a team victory. The freshmen group looked awesome as they finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 10th individually! David Hand ran his best race of the season finishing second, Ryan Al-Tayar was 3rd, Pablo Rodriguez 4th, Nico Karnopp 6th, Ramsay Shi 7th and Kyle Swope 10th.
We ended the afternoon at Stahlman Park on Surfside beach building sandcastles, body surfing and playing soccer. It turned out to be a pretty good weekend with the Texans also taking down Washington on a nice, rainy Sunday.

CCCAT Pre-Season State Ranking
We are classified in the UIL as 6A which is the highest classification in the state. The Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas is a poll voted on by the coaches of Texas. As you can see there are 2 Houston area teams in the top 3 in The Woodlands and College Park. Six of the teams are from the Dallas area and we won't see them unless we get to the state meet. These will change when meets start happening and coaches can see who is running well based on meet results. Next week we will look at the TXrunning.com pre-season poll.

Tompkins Boys 2nd at Cy-Ridge Invite
On a day that was mainly used as a day of training, the Tompkins boys were able to produce some pretty good results. Some of the boys who raced ran 4 miles BEFORE the race to get us ready for our big day on October 25th. We call Saturday our LD (longest day) to get ready for the race that is the most important, the district championships.
The boys raced well on a hot day, that was just right for us, and pulled off a second place finish behind Spring Woods, in our first varsity team event. We destroyed the school record for a 2 mile team run.

Spike Week at Luke's Locker
Luke's Locker, Katy will be holding spike week this week.
The following is the promotion that Luke's will have for our High School student-runners.
Also, I want to call-out the 10% off watches. This is one of the only times Luke's gives a discount to any of their customers. This is a good time to take advantage.

Parent Meeting, Paperwork and Practice
Our 2014 Parent Meeting is schedule for Thursday, August 7th at 6:30pm in room 1801-1802 at Tompkins High School which is across the hall from the North Gym. I will be prepared to answer questions and hand out the parent team packet on that day. We will talk about expectations, fundraisers, travel plans and a lot more.
Officially we begin practice Monday, August 3rd at 6:30am at the picnic tables behind the Tompkins commons (across from the track entrance). All paperwork must be completed to participate in that practice. Please click on the attachment provided below for information on how to turn in the paperwork online. Physicals done before May 1st will not be accepted. I pleased with the guys to take care of this before school got out but very few did. They only things that come directly to Coach Dye are a copy of the birth certificate and a recent utility bill that has home address and name.
We will race on Saturday, August 9th at Seven Lakes High School at 7am. This is a practice meet so no bus transportation will be provided.
If all paperwork is completed and the $50 participation fee has been turned in (either online or a check made out to Katy ISD) the next thing each runner will need is a 2-3 inch 3-ring binder, with 2 packages of dividers, a pencil bag and a plastic covering to insert cover sheets. They will also need pens/pencils for the pencil bag.
Coach Dye will be out all of next week so if anything needs to be turned in please see our trainer, Dallas Allmon.

Kyle Petryszak 2nd at Xterra American Endurance Trail Race Today
Kyle was second in his age group and fourth overall in Colorado today at altitude. The race was a 1400 foot ascent to 9800 feet. He was beaten by a sub-5 minute miler from Colorado in his age group and two men who are Colorado trail runners. Kyle is proving again what hard work over time will do! Congratulations Kyle. He will be back at practice this week before he is off to the Run Across Texas Camp.

Coach Dye's Pre-Season State XC Rankings
The Top 5
Region I has proven to be, what soccer fans would call, the "Region of Death". If you can win that region you'll probably win state and the Nike South Regional Qualifier. Last year Hebron couldn't make it out of that region but qualified for Nike Nationals. We also saw six of the top 9 teams at Nike South come out of that region. That being said, some of the teams in my top 10 will not even get to the state meet!
5. Timber Creek (5th @ NXN South, 4th @ State) - With 4 returning contributors this team will be very hard to beat anywhere. Unfortunately they have one of the toughest roads ahead of them. They are 9th on paper but they have proven they are better than that.
4. The Woodlands (3rd @ NXN South, 7th @ State) - Still a young team but throughout the history of cross country in Texas they run their best when they have to. They will be led by 2 juniors, Butero and Henderson, and will probably make it back to Nike Nationals. This is a team that can never be counted out.
3. Hebron (4th @ Region I, 2nd @ NXN South) - This team didn't get to run at state finishing one spot out of qualifying by 22 points but regrouped and came back at Nike South and qualified for a trip to Portland, Oregon. They have 4 guys coming back and will be led by Ethan Davis.
2. College Park (4th @ NXN South, 2nd @ State) - One of the best coaches in the state in my opinion in Mike Gibson, the best word I can use to describe this team is "scrappy". I use to hate when people said runners were gutsy or scrappy but I think it is appropriate with this squad. They have 4 runners back and are known for working extremely hard. I think this team could be the one to de-throne the state champs.
1. Southlake Carroll (1st @ state, 1st @ NXN South) - Champs until someone proves they are not. They have 4 runners back and tons of guys waiting in the wings to be on the state squad.

Practice Times for July
Summer school is over at Morton Ranch High School so practice has been pushed back to 6:30am for Monday through Saturday. Coach Dye will be there everyday except Friday this week and next week will only be there for the hard days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).
The last week of July will be on your own and we will get officially underway with the racing season on the first Monday of August at 6:30am.
All paperwork needs to be turned in to the training staff at Tompkins as soon as possible. If you do not have all necessary forms either turned in or completed online you will not be able to practice in August. The sooner these things get turned in the better!

Coach Dye's Pre-Season State XC Rankings
July is here and cross country meets are just around the corner. Websites like Dyestat, Milesplit, CCCAT and TXrunning will soon put out their pre-season rankings but I wanted to beat them to the punch. I am only ranking 6A Boys, the classification in which we will compete, and I am basing my thoughts on last years' performances along with returning runners. Again these are just my personal opinions and very little stock should be out into them. During the season I will refer to 2 different ranking systems to inform us of who we are racing and who we may see at specific meets. The first is the CCCAT (Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas). Member coaches vote on their classification every few weeks. Some coaches take this very seriously, others do not, most don't bother to vote. I always vote. The other is the TXrunning Computer Poll. This basically takes the runners times and ranks them individually adding the top 5 to make the ranking score. Pretty accurate, however, sometimes runners gets listed twice because their name was spelled differently or the course is mis-measured or it was just a phenomenally fast day at whatever meet they ran the times on...etc. So here are my Texas 6-A number 10-6 (Look for 1-5 next Tuesday):
10. El Paso Eastwood (6th @ Region 1-5A, 9th @ NXN South) - they return the #1 team in the state on paper but failed to get out of their region last year, however they did finish 9th at the Nike South Regional after the state meet. They do return a top five average of 16:10 for 5k which if they could recreate in Roundrock they would have finished 2nd to Southlake Carroll. I would rank them higher but they have to show me in a big time meet that they are worthy.
9. Plano West (10th @ State, 12th @ NXN South) - finished 10th at the state meet in 2013 and return 5 of their top 7. Averaged 16:40 for 5k as a team and preform well under pressure. If they have a good summer they could be on the medal stand in November. Jason Vincze's 15:43 is a solid #1 time to start the season with this year.
8. Cy-Woods (8th @ State, 14th @ NXN South) - this team was underrated in my opinion last year and rarely ran their best guys together during the season. I think 8th may be a little off, meaning I think they are better than 8th in the state, but Coach Zarate does a great job of not showing his hand until the regional meet. They return their top runner plus 4 of their top 7 from their 8th place state meet finish in 2013. Pablo Talavera should be a solid number 5 runner who had to go to Roundrock as an alternate last year.
7. Del Rio (5th @ State, DNC @ NXN South)- the valley often feels under-appreciated and counted out. Del Rio is my dark horse/underdog to win it all this year. They will have trouble with the perennial " big dogs" in Roundrock but if they have just the right race on just the right day they could be the first state champions from down south. Last year this team finished 5th in state and they return 5 of their top 7. They lost their number 1 runner to graduation but the 5 that were right behind him take another stab at a championship. I should probably put these guys in the top 3 but their reputation of under-performing at big meets is keeping me from doing that. Much like Eastwood I need to see some big time performances at some big time meets to get a higher vote from me.
6. Flower Mound Marcus (7th @ Region 1-5A, 7th @ NXN South) - this was a very good team last year that did not get out of their region. On paper they are the #3 team in the state returning but I have a hard time putting a non-state qualifier in my top 5. Logan and Luke Hendrix are a solid top 2 and the returners averaged 16:19 last year which would be good enough for 3rd at state. They need to have a good day a regionals to advance but they will be as good as anyone if they make it back to Roundrock.
Next Tuesday I will post the top 5, check back tomorrow for our first Workout Wednesday (WOW) edition!
